American Airlines Flight Attendants Vote to Authorize Strike

Union seeks government permission to strike in 30 days

Concerns over working conditions, pay, and benefits

American Airlines flight attendants have voted overwhelmingly to authorize union leaders to call a strike, a move designed to pressure the airline to address concerns over working conditions, pay, and benefits.

The Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA), which represents American's flight attendants, announced the vote results on Tuesday, November 20, 2023. According to the APFA, 97% of flight attendants voted in favor of authorizing a strike.

The union has now submitted a request to the National Mediation Board (NMB), a federal agency that oversees labor negotiations in the airline industry, for permission to strike. If the NMB grants permission, the flight attendants could go on strike as early as 30 days from now.

The APFA says that flight attendants are seeking better working conditions, including more rest time and better pay and benefits. The union also says that American Airlines has been unwilling to negotiate in good faith.

American Airlines has said that it is committed to reaching a fair agreement with its flight attendants and that it is disappointed that the union has authorized a strike.
